Flight to Moscow

Travel to Moscow
Being Russia's capital city, there are a lot of flights departing from all major US cities, however, if you are taking a foreign carrier, be prepared for a change of aircraft at its major international hub airport, such as Frankfurt for Lufthansa and Zurich for Swiss Airlines. Terminal 2 at Sheremtyevo is the most common port of entry and is surprisingly small for such a new airport catering to such a big city.

Site seeing in Moscow
You have to see the Red Square and marvel at the red walls of the Kremlin and golden towers. The circus on Sparrow Hills is the more modern of the two and offers a great show for little money. Ice-skate around Gorky park in the winter or wander around the amusement park during the warmer months. There's a large selection of galleries and museums displaying a lot of very interesting historical artifacts. Some of the more interesting ones are the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, The Armoury and the Central Museum of the Revolution. For more information about the various museums in Moscow please visit the Russian Museums and Galleries website.

Dining out in Moscow
Potatoes, bread, eggs, pork and beef are the most common ingredients. Russian foods tend to be quite rich in fat and carbs to help brave the long cold winters. If you have a weak stomach, stick to the tried and tested foods. Some of the stalls sell some really good fresh food, but many others aren't so diligent on storage and preparation. Tap water is not for drinking, but there's a plentiful supply of bottled water, although in some of the more rural areas only carbonated is available.

Shopping in Moscow
If you can read Russian, you'll want to take a peek at Biblio Globus, a huge Russian bookstore which is often very crowded. The state department store, or the GUM (Gosudarstvennyi Universal'nyi Magazin) is particularly impressive with it's glass ceilings and wide array of shops. The area north of the GUM also has some great little shops. You may be surprised by some of the very upscale fashion, jewelry stores and other luxury stores available to you.

Moscow Transportation
From the moment you pass through customs at the airport you'll be bombarded by sometimes quite aggressive taxi drivers vying for your business. If you speak Russian, you can haggle for a better price, otherwise don't expect any bargain cab fares. As strange as it seems, you can flag down almost any car and the driver will give you a ride for a price. Just make sure you haggle and set the price before the journey begins.

The Moscow Metro is a great (and cheap) way to travel. For just $0.25 you can ride along inside the system as long as you like, admiring the mosaics and pictures. The Moscow metro was originally designed to be used as air raid shelters, so it was architected to depict the Russian culture to maintain morale. Make sure you obtain a map first, because none of the signs are in English.
