While in Madrid, we recommend that you visit the Parque Del Retiro, at this park you will enjoy the rose gardens, artificial lake, and statues of Spanish leaders. If art is your thing, choose one of the museums along Paseo del Prado. However, if you are more of a history buff, check out Palacio Real. This palace of over 300 rooms was used by the Royal family until 1931. Another great historical spot is the Plaza Mayor, located in the city center, which was once the site of of bullfights, great festivals, and ceremonies, plays, public burnings of heretics, and the crowning of kings. Plaza Mayor has played a vital role in Spanish history. |

When dining in Madrid, you will find that Madrid cuisine is a combination of tastes from all over the Spanish peninsula. One suggestion we have while dining in Madrid is to consider ordering tapas as and appetizer. This is flavorful tidbits of a range of dishes served by the restaurant. You will enjoy this Spanish tradition, some restaurants actually specialize in this type of appetizer. Check out this Madrid restaurant guide from Fodors.com. |

As you head out to shop in Madrid, keep these few thoughts in mind. The shops near the Plaza Mayor will sell a variety of traditional items that you would expect to find in Spain that would make great souvenirs. Then you can also check out the large department stores near the Puerta del Sol. But while you are in Madrid, be sure to visit the open air markets. The Rastro, the premier flea market, is open on Saturdays and Sundays, it is located between Plaza de Cascorro, La Latina and the street of Embajadores. This flea market has a variety of everything, and we suggest you stop by. |

When traveling around in Madrid, many guides recommend walking. The touristy part of the city, the city center, is easily walk-able. However if your not the walking type, or if it is too hot in the summer, then the metro or buses are for you. The Madrid metro offers single trip passes and 10 trip passes. If you are staying for a while, the 10 trip passes offer quite a saving. The city of Madrid offers two types of buses, the city buses and the tour buses. View more information on the city buses and metro system. The tour buses have also gotten great reviews online, view more information on some of the tour buses. Finally, another way to get around is with taxis, more expensive, but very convenient. |
