Site seeing in Athens
You absolutely must see the view from the top of Mount Lykavittos (pronounced "lee-ka-vee-tos"). You can drive to the top or if you're more active, you can walk up, then grab a snack and a drink at the top. The views are amazing and it's a good photo opportunity. Be sure to avoid walking around through the trees at the base of the mountain at night, as it's been known for unsavory characters to lurk there.

The Acropolis and Acropolis Museum has tour guides which walk through with you explaining the museum's rich historical artifacts. The Acropolis is the actual hill or "Sacred Rock" of Athens and the Parthenon is the temple which was erected between 447-438 B.C and built on the ruins of previous temples. This is one of Greece's national icons and inside there are depictions of gods, beasts and 360 humans, describing the Procession of Panathenaea, the most formal of religious festival of ancient Athens.

Other sites in Athens to see are the Erechtheion built in 420 B.C., The Temple of Athena Nike constructed in 420 B.C and the Propylea built in 437-432 B.C. With so many historical structures, you will definitely need to being a camera with lots of film or a large memory card.

If you're after the party atmosphere, be sure to check out Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Paros, Syros, Ios, Hydra, Skiathos, Patmos, Jos and Rhodes. If you're looking for a family oriented trip, you can visit Lefkada, Kefallonia, Zakynthos, Naxos, Tinos, Kythnos, Aegina and Poros.

There are many religious holidays in August so make sure you call ahead to check a restaurant is open for business. Prices typically include the main course and an appetizer, but no wine. There are many traditional Greek Tavernas and restaurants to choose from, although if you're feeling homesick you can find some American chain restaurants such as TGI Fridays, Applebees, McDonalds, Wendy's, KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Although there are supposed to be non-smoking areas in restaurants, specified by the European Union, you'll find this is blatantly ignored by the locals.

Transportation in Athens
Athens has a very modern tram system with inspirational Italian design and can accelerate from 0-60 in 8 seconds. They seat 57 people and stand 150 so there's plenty of room, just be sure to hang on tight! Athens new metro is also fast, clean and inexpensive taking you through the city as well as to and from Athens airport. There are also bus transfers and plush Mercedes if you have more luggage or feel like being pampered.

As with all foreign public transport, please be careful with your belongings as pickpockets are always on the prowl, especially in the tourist areas.

If you rent a car, make sure you get a good street map as road signs can be quite confusing.
