United Airlines History and Service

United Airlines is the largest subsiduary of UAL Corporation which was incorporated in 1968. From its early beginnings in 1926 as a mail carrier, United has become one of the largest airlines in the world with the third largest operating revenues. It operated over 460 aircraft owning over 200 and leasing the rest. The fleet is made up of almost 100 Boeing 757's, 30 747's and approximately 100 737s, with most of the fleet designated to short haul domestic flights and the 747s being used almost exclusively for international flights.

During the past few years, United has also been affected by the economic downturn in the travel industry and filed Chapter 11 in December 2002, only just emerging from it in February 2006.

United is one of the founding members of the Star Alliance network which is used to create a seemless travel network through its airline members. It's main hubs are Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Denver (DEN), San Francisco (SFO), Washington Dulles (IAD) and Los Angeles (LAX) where they ofer flights to over 200 destinations around the world.
